About the walk
Newcastle's East End holds many chapters of the city's history within a short walk of the harbour. Beginning at Nobbys Beach, join Our Past to explore how convict labour, shipping, industry and defence shaped today’s city.
Hear about the Japanese submarine shelling of Newcastle in June 1942, visit the site of Newcastle's first gaol and discover traces of the railways and working waterfront. At the old burial ground beside Christ Church Cathedral, a local mystery adds another layer to the story.
This walk brings together the people, events and changing landscape of Newcastle's East End, before returning to the starting point at Nobbys.
